 about brickthrewglass

Brick threw glass is a Movie review website. Brick threw glass is a metaphor I made up for film, the BRICK is the anamorphic shot blocking, and GLASS is the camera lens , the word THREW is a play on words, should have been thru but, I used the words THREW. This website reviews and critics films in a different way,using humor it also tries to interject some of my technical knowledge of how films are created and made into the process.

image: titlte: no spoiler reviews
OK “We don’t do spoilers”; it’s my policy to be very vague about the story lines of the films I review here. I have always hated reading movie reviews that tell to much about a film. Entering a theater already having preconceived notions about the plot and / or the outcome of the film in the past have ruined the viewing experience for me,so this is why  these reviews are written this way . The Chronicles of Riddick: Movie Review 2004

The Chronicles of Riddick: Movie Review :2009

The Chronicles of Riddick  starts with a brief monolog about the Necromongers a race of zombie like warriors in armor, that can’t be defeated while marching through space following there holy undead leader the Lord Marshal (Colm Feore).Then we are introduced to Riddick (Vin Diesel) the last of the Furyan race, he is hiding from the world on a deserted snow-covered planet and being chased by bounty hunters, who he then pushes out of their space ship and heads off to find out why he’s being hunted. He knows of only one person who he has told of his whereabouts, he is on the planet Helion Prime which is under attack from you guessed it the Necromongers. Once there on Helion Prime he is told by Aereon (Judi Dench), an envoy of the Elementals about a prophecy that states one lone Furyan will rise to defeat the Lord Marshall and she thinks it’s Riddick. This movie got mixed reviews when it was released in 2004 as in my opinion it was a smart thriller as well as a science fiction movie and too much for the average viewer, it’s a big story with a wide scope. This film is follow up to Pitch Black which is the first time viewers got to meet the Riddick character and he defeats these crazy night time bests that attack a group of stranded adventures when there spaceship crashes on a lost world.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Movie Review new

. Vin Diesel is at his best as Riddick this is my favorite character he has played and Riddick is more than a super hero, he is a guy who has a destiny that he is not sure he really wants. This was an expensive movie to make with extravagant sets and effects that still hold up 5 years later. The story is complex and well written with just enough back story to make you care what happens to the main characters, but still moves right along  without a dull moment to spare . I watched this film on Blu-ray and it was amazing, with the Computer generated graphics really popping out of the scenes , especially the shots of the ornate decorations inside of the Necromonger space ship …

28 Days Later 2002 :: movie review

28 Days Later 2002 :: movie review

 28 Days Later starts as three animal rights activists break into an experimental primate facility and un-cage a monkey exposed to a deadly virus (that is described as RAGE). When our hero Jim (Cillian Murphy) awakens from a coma in a deserted hospital (28 days later), he walks the empty streets of London until he is attacked by the infected and saved then befriended by to survivors who blow up a whole city block to escape. This movie is very intense for the first 20 minutes and absorbs you into it like a sponge, I and probably everyone who sees this film asks ones selves what they would do in this situation. There is money blowing down the streets and no one around, do you pick it up? Is it even worth anything anymore? Jim’s solution was to walks into a church after the he realizes what has happened to everyone, to pray I would guess. The big difference between a British film like this and an American one I noticed was the lack of guns, the characters in the movie use bats and machetes to kill the undead, and there isn’t a shot fired for a good part of the movie. If this was done in Hollywood it would have been more like a Raccoon City in Resident Evil where there was allot of shooting, but this is a deeper primal struggle. This is one of the best post-apocalyptic films I’ve seen and with the scenes of the British capital devoid human life is really so spooky, surreal and strangely beautiful.

Memento :: movie review 2000
This is the story of  Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce) who can’t make any new memories every time he wakes up or drifts off he was to start all over. Lenny is on a quest to find his wife’s killer by tattooing facts on his body and taking Polaroid pictures with notes. He has a system and this is where the plot of this movie thrives, in flashbacks and the underlying of story of Sammy Jankis who he meet years earlier and had a similar condition, so Lenny’s has “remember Sammy Jankis” tattooed on his hand this is the audiences first cue that this is going to get interesting. This is a lesson in how a great script, well acted scenes and well thought out staging and shot blocking can make a great film that didn’t cast 100 million dollars. I was given this film by an old friend Tom Ardavany who is an acting coach to the rich and famous and I edited a film trailer for, and from the viewpoint of an editor this movie is magic. I was and still am amazed the depth of the performances and the story driven drama. This movie is not pretentious and I don’t think anyone who was involved in this project new it would all gel into such a great movie. It may be a bit heavy for younger viewers but it’s a film that every film school student should watch and learn how to make a clever thriller without the explosions and special effects and rely on the script and acting to make a watchable and engaging film.
