 about brickthrewglass

Brick threw glass is a Movie review website. Brick threw glass is a metaphor I made up for film, the BRICK is the anamorphic shot blocking, and GLASS is the camera lens , the word THREW is a play on words, should have been thru but, I used the words THREW. This website reviews and critics films in a different way,using humor it also tries to interject some of my technical knowledge of how films are created and made into the process.

image: titlte: no spoiler reviews
OK “We don’t do spoilers”; it’s my policy to be very vague about the story lines of the films I review here. I have always hated reading movie reviews that tell to much about a film. Entering a theater already having preconceived notions about the plot and / or the outcome of the film in the past have ruined the viewing experience for me,so this is why  these reviews are written this way . More info about our NO Spoiler Movie Review!

We have added the 3.5 and 2.5 into our movie review ratings to make this website a little deeper and Adding to the the readers enjoyment ... More about our  4 STAR MOVIE REVIEW SYSTEM

The Soloist :: movie review
The Soloist  is based on the  true story of  Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx) , a musician that los Angeles times reporter Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.) encounters in downtown playing a violin with 2 strings. They start to talk and Nathaniel starts mentioning names of people in an offhand way, Lopez asks who they are, he replies that they were classmates at Juilliard; Lopez realizes that he means The Juilliard School of music in New York City. Interested in the possibly of a story, he calls Juilliard and the school calls back and he finds out that Nathaniel was really there and dropped out. So he starts a series of articles on Nathaniel that lead to a cello being donates to him and Lopez then tries to get him off the streets. There is a scene were Ayers is first playing the cello and Lopez is watching on the side of the road by a tunnel, that is truly magical. This is based on a true story and I didn’t read the book or any of the articles so I can’t comment to the truthfulness of these betrayals. I was really thinking that this was going to be the year’s best picture after the first 20 minutes, but despite moving and Oscar caliber performances by both  Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. there are some slow spots in the story. The sound effects that try to explain what Nathaniel is hearing in his head is cool as an effect once but the second time became burdensome and distracting for a film that is biased on classical music and the beauty of a full symphony in full concord and just of dropped it down a notch or two. Don’t get me wrong there is magic just not as much as I would have hoped for and the use of wild camera angles and lighting just didn’t bring to life the slow pace of the center of the film.
The Soloist :: movie review 2009

The whole homeless in Los Angeles issue and the need to reform the welfare system is a touchy subject, as like Nathaniel there are allot of really smart people with talent that end up, living outside and/or addicted to drugs. I wish this film have of had a side story of Lopez and his ex-wife that would have added some depth, and I was interested as to what lead to their situation and that was never really explained…
